Abstracting the landscape – paint like Etel Adnan art

Would you like to learn more about abstracting the landscape to make abstract art? I will show you what I use to make colorful abstract landscapes … … so you can paint like Etel Adnan art too. Just after this. Hi there, my name is Albert van der Zwart, welcome to Imperfect Paintings … … where it is all about improving your painting skills by looking at art, yourself and the world around you. Etel Adnan was born in 1925 and is a Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist. I just love her colorful abstract landscape paintings without any details like these. Only interesting color planes and you instantly know it is a landscape. Wonderful, isn’t it? I cycled around my hometown and took these picture. But it is not interesting enough so I get closer and even closer. Do you see how the image changes? For abstracting the landscape you first have to identify what you see and what you want to use. I make a sketch based on elements of these pictures for my painting. The trees on the left, the grass, the water, the hill, a dark sky … … like minutes before it starts to rain, the ski slope and a sun/moon thing in the sky. The fun of making an abstract painting like this is that you can do whatever you want … … with regard to color, sizes and what to incorporate or leave out. I painted the sky too far down so I paint my white ski slope … … partly over the already dried darker sky. This painting is made mainly with dried color planes. I had a lot to do that day and in between all the other things … … I step by step made this painting. I leave it like this, I kinda like the white sun/moon thing. Let me show you a little trick when painting with a pallet knife. Wet colors can easily mix, what you don’t want in a painting like this. And now the yellow next to it. Oeps, too much. A little bit less pressure and that looks better. I put the knife right next to the first color and push on it … … tilt it a little and the paint get squeezed from under it. Practice it a number of times and you’ll get the hang of it. When you look closely at the painting of Etel Adnan … … you will see the same little ridges of paint. Maybe she painted in the same way. I like abstracting the landscape like this so I’ll make another one. On a business park I saw this red trailer … … and on the left the blue roof and some trees and a fence. So I make a sketch. And start painting. I only have a limited amount of time so I have to paint … … wet paint next to wet paint like I showed you earlier. I like pink so there I go. And go too far, I leave some space for a tree, but forgot the red trailer. I remove the wet paint and apply the red paint. The painting needs some light so I choose yellow for the sky. And accidently I got some red paint on my pallet knife … … just some more yellow solves the problem. When you make paintings like this, you learn to study the colors used by the artists … … in this case by Etel Adnan. And at the same time feel free to choose your own combination. By making your own color choices you will also learn how to use them. If you’re looking for more abstract composition ideas … … it can be enough to look around in your daily life. What catches your eye and find a just find some time to me a painting about it. Let me show you how that works for me. click on the link and I will see you over there in the next video.
